Feezel & Dally Straw-Bale Raising
HarvestBuild will be leading the straw-bale raising this spring at the Feezel & Dally residence in Carrollton, Ohio. The two-story salt-box style straw-bale house with basement and round-log timber frame will feature our baling-on-the-edge straw-bale wall system. For information on volunteering during the construction process, contact Paul Feezel on-line at Distracted by Nature Farms, or call 330-627-5705.
Wolff & Tarr Ground-Breaking
Marcia Wolff and Steve Tarr will be breaking ground this spring on the construction of their single-story straw-bale home in Akron, Ohio. The foundation, frame, and roof will be completed during the spring, with the straw-bale raising to take place in the summer. This home will also be the site of our annual natural building workshops for the Cleveland Green Building Coalition.
Pittsburgh Straw-Bale and Finish Plaster Workshops
Mark Hoberecht of HarvestBuild, Chris Fox of Fox's Natural Building Company, and Mary Golden of Gaiatecture Design will team up to teach two weekend natural building workshops for Mildreds' Daughters Urban Farm in June. The first weekend (June 3-5) will cover site considerations, foundation and roof interfaces, wiring and plumbing details, stacking and securing straw bales, and mixing and application of the first coat of rough plaster. The second weekend (June 17-19) will cover the theory, preparation, and application of various finish plaster options, including earth plasters, lime finishes and frescoes, decorative alís, casein paints, and gypsum and Structolite plasters. Both weekend workshops will take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania—the project is a small timber-frame utility building located on a 5-acre organic farm in a city neighborhood overlooking the Allegheny River.
