Garza Residence
Charlotte, Michigan
HarvestBuild collaborated with Ferut Architects on the design of this one-and-a-half-story straw-bale house. The home features a post-and-beam frame, our baling-on-the-edge infill straw-bale wall system, and earth and lime plasters throughout. During construction, HarvestBuild led several weekend workshops for bale raising, straw/clay, and plaster work. The homeowners, Jason and Linda Garza, were then able to complete the rest of the natural building work with the help of family, friends, and volunteers.

"After much research and searching on the web, we came across an article in our local newspaper about a straw-bale home project in the Cleveland, Ohio area. Mark Hoberecht with HarvestBuild was quoted in the article. We got in touch with him and talked about our plans of wanting to build with bales. Right from our first conversation he was helpful and insightful on the path we should follow."
"Mark referred us to an architect, Joe Ferut, that he could work directly with to streamline the design process. They met us at our site, and from there the project began. With Mark working directly with Joe, they were able to work out all the design details together and more efficiently. It turned out to be a great team."
"Throughout the project Mark was there — he met with the contractors when needed either in person or by phone to explain all of the unconventional building details. Even with us being a few hours apart, he was able to meet with us at our site for design discussions, and lead the workshops for the bale raising and earth plastering. Mark was an asset to our project and one of the main reasons our straw-bale home construction was a success. Thanks Mark for all of your help!"
