Denison University Student Building

Granville, Ohio

This one and a half story straw-bale building serves as a kitchen, library, and gathering space for a group of college students. HarvestBuild acted as a consultant on the design of the building, and led several workshops during the construction process. The building features a post-and-beam frame with our baling-on-the-edge exterior straw-bale wall system, cob sculptural elements, and earth and lime plasters throughout. The students themselves performed the majority of the construction.

Testimonial

"Mark Hoberecht is our straw consultant; we are using his techniques for the straw and plaster. He is cc'd on this message. I am very confident in his understanding of the materials and techniques. He is worth his fee and more. He has come down for a few hands-on workshops, which left us feeling fully capable of doing it ourselves. We've had a variety of relatively unskilled workers (students) who were able to pick up the techniques easily."

"This has been a great project. I would build my own house with straw. The feel and character is wonderful and the materials lend themselves to creativity."
